Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Beef, beef broth, beef liver, pork.
- Contains: Beef ... Pork ... Grains (whole barley).
- Does not contain: Chicken, turkey, duck, lamb, fish, egg, dairy, corn, wheat, soy, peas, lentils, chickpeas, potatoes or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Beef plus pork. Pork is the fifth ingredient, so this is not a single-protein beef can. It does contain whole barley.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages under the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles, so it can be fed to kittens and adult cats alike.
Beef Pâté is the red-meat option in Fromm's Four-Star pâté line: finely minced beef cooked in broth, smooth and rich. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, makes it in small batches, and it's complete and balanced for all life stages.
What's actually in it
Beef, beef broth and beef liver lead, followed by whole barley, pork and tomato paste. There is no poultry and no fish anywhere on the list, which is uncommon for a cat food.
Taurine, which cats need in their diet, is added along with a full vitamin and mineral pack and calcium sulfate. Xanthan gum and locust bean gum give the pâté its texture. At 146 kcal per can it is one of the lighter cans in the Four-Star pâté line.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a cat that prefers red meat, and families looking for a can with no chicken, turkey, duck or fish. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, kittens and adults can both have it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that age, breed, weight, activity level and other factors will affect how much food a cat needs. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a gentle waist behind the ribs... and adjust. If you feed dry food as well, cut the canned amount back so the day's total stays about the same. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Cats can be particular, so change foods gradually over about a week, or longer for a picky eater. Start with a small spoonful of Beef Pâté mixed into the old food, then increase it a little each day until it's the whole meal. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach, and opinions, time to adjust.
Sizes, and how long a case lasts
5.5 oz cans in a 12-pack. For a 10 lb cat eating 1⅘ cans a day with nothing else, a 12-pack lasts just under a week. If you also feed dry food, it will stretch further. Can counts are worked out from Fromm's feeding chart and are close estimates.
Storage
Fromm doesn't publish separate guidance for opened cans, so follow the usual rule: cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days. Unopened cans keep best somewhere cool and dry.
