Louie's is the stew for the dog who thinks dinner should look like a real plate of food. Chunks of chicken and little chickpea-pasta noodles simmer in a savory broth with green beans and peas, cooked in small batches by Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin. It's complete and balanced, so it can be the whole meal or a happy spoonful on top of kibble.
What's actually in it
Chicken is the first ingredient, followed by chicken broth and turkey broth. The pasta is the part people ask about: Fromm makes it from chickpea flour, dried egg product, chicken liver and pea protein, so there's no wheat in it. Green beans and peas fill out the vegetables, and parsley and turmeric show up near the end of the list in small amounts.
Sunflower oil provides the added fat. Xanthan gum thickens the broth into a stew. There are no grains or potatoes on the list. At 82% maximum moisture, it brings a good amount of water along with every meal.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits dogs of any age and size who like a chunky, saucy texture, including growing puppies of large breeds, since the AAFCO statement covers all life stages. It's also a nice way to make a bowl of kibble more interesting for a picky eater.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. If you serve this alongside kibble, cut both back so the day's total stays about the same. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Louie's mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Louie's. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how long a case lasts
Cases of 12 cans. Fromm's chart has a 20 lb dog eating about 1⅕ cans a day as its only food, so a case lasts that dog about 10 days. Used as a topper, it goes much further. These are close estimates worked out from Fromm's chart.
Storage
Cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days. Unopened cans keep best somewhere cool and dry.
