Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken liver), menhaden fish meal, egg, cheese.
- Contains: Chicken ... Fish ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Grains (brown rice, pearled barley, oatmeal, white rice) ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Corn, wheat, soy, beef, pork, lamb, peas, lentils or potatoes (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a chicken-free food. Chicken and chicken meal are the first two ingredients, with chicken fat and chicken liver further down. Fish, egg and cheese are in it too.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers growth and maintenance, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Classic Adult is Fromm's original recipe, the one the line is named for. It's a simple, grain-inclusive chicken kibble from a family-owned Wisconsin company, made for the everyday adult dog who doesn't need anything fancy. If you want a short, familiar ingredient list and a food that has been around a long time, this is a sensible place to land.
What's actually in it
Chicken comes first, followed by chicken meal, which is chicken with the water cooked out so it adds concentrated protein. Menhaden fish meal, dried egg product, cheese and chicken liver fill out the protein side. There's no long list of rotating meats here... it's a chicken food, plainly labeled.
The carbohydrates are all grains: brown rice, pearled barley, oatmeal and white rice, plus beet pulp for fiber. There are no potatoes, peas or lentils. Flaxseed adds omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. Chicken fat is preserved with mixed tocopherols, and sorbic acid is the other preservative.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy adult dog with no known food sensitivities, and families who prefer a grain-inclusive food with a straightforward recipe. Because the AAFCO statement covers growth as well as maintenance, it can also be fed to a growing puppy, large breeds included, though Fromm does make a dedicated Classic Puppy.
It isn't the right bag for a dog avoiding chicken, fish, egg or dairy, since all four are in it. At 23% minimum protein it's a moderate food rather than a high-protein one, so a very hard-working dog may need more of it. Fromm Family Classic Adult Dog Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth and maintenance, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).
Calorie content
3,718 kcal/kg ... 1,690 kcal/lb ... 409 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Classic Adult mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Classic Adult. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
5 lb, 15 lb and 30 lb bags, which hold roughly 21, 62 and 124 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3 cups a day, that's about a week, three weeks, and six weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
