Know Before You Buy

Chicken and rice is the comfort-food combination dog families have trusted for generations. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, finely minces chicken and cooks it in chicken broth with brown rice, carrots and broccoli for a smooth pâté that's complete on its own.
What's actually in it
Chicken leads three ways: chicken, chicken broth and chicken liver. Salmon oil is the only other animal ingredient and adds omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat.
Brown rice is the carbohydrate, joined by carrots, peas, broccoli and a little tomato paste. There are no potatoes or lentils. Agar-agar and xanthan gum give the pâté its sliceable texture, and the vitamins and minerals make it complete and balanced.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a dog who does well on chicken and a family who'd rather feed grain-inclusive. The short animal-ingredient list makes it an easy everyday can, and the AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including large breed puppies.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. If you serve it alongside kibble, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Chicken & Rice Pâté mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Chicken & Rice Pâté. If you're only adding a spoonful as a topper, a slow start still helps. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how long a case lasts
Sold as a single 12 oz can or a 12-pack. Using Fromm's chart, a 15 lb dog eating 1 can a day as its only food would go through a 12-pack in about 12 days. As a topper over kibble, it lasts much longer.
Storage
Cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days. Unopened cans keep best somewhere cool and dry.
