Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Whitefish, fish broth, menhaden fish meal, dried egg product, pork liver, salmon oil, pork fat, herring meal, cheese.
- Contains: Fish ... Pork ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Grains (brown rice, pearled barley, oatmeal, white rice, millet, whole oats, whole barley) ... Peas ... Potatoes (potatoes, sweet potatoes).
- Does not contain: Chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, duck, corn, wheat, soy, lentils, chickpeas or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a fish-only food. Pork liver and pork fat sit in the middle of the list, ahead of the herring meal, and egg and cheese are in it too. It is, however, free of chicken.

Whitefish & Potato is the Four-Star bag for families who want fish at the front of the bowl and grains still in the mix. Despite the name, it is not a grain-free food... it pairs whitefish and potatoes with a whole spread of grains, and Fromm labels it for dogs of every age, from puppy to senior.
What's actually in it
Fish leads the list three ways: whitefish, fish broth and menhaden fish meal, with herring meal and salmon oil further down. Fish meal is fish with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Dried egg product, pork liver, pork fat and cheese fill out the rest of the protein and fat side, so this is a fish-forward recipe rather than a fish-only one.
For carbohydrates, sweet potatoes and potatoes come first, followed by brown rice, pearled barley, oatmeal, white rice, millet, whole oats and whole barley, plus a measure of peas. Salmon oil and flaxseed bring omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Fromm also adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. Preservation comes from mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a dog who does well on fish and on grains, and families looking for a chicken-free food that still includes oats, barley and rice. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs, one bag can work for a puppy and an adult dog in the same house.

3,446 kcal/kg ... 1,566 kcal/lb ... 362 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need considerably more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Whitefish & Potato mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Whitefish & Potato. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 52 and 112 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3¼ cups a day, that's about five days, about two weeks, and about five weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
