Fromm Four-Star Surf & Turf Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Fish (salmon, fish broth, salmon meal, salmon oil, herring meal), chicken (chicken, chicken fat, chicken liver), duck meal, egg, cheese.
- Contains: Fish ... Chicken ... Duck ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Peas, lentils and chickpeas (lentils, chickpeas, peas, pea flour, pea protein) ... Potatoes (potatoes, sweet potatoes).
- Does not contain: Grains (no corn, wheat, rice, oats or barley), soy, beef, pork, lamb or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- The "turf" is chicken and duck, not beef. There is no beef in this recipe. Chicken is the third ingredient, so it is not a choice for a dog avoiding chicken.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Surf & Turf is a grain-free Four-Star recipe from Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin. Fromm describes it as a savory blend of salmon, fish broth, chicken and potatoes with an assortment of fruits and vegetables... a little of the sea and a little of the farm in the same bowl.
What's actually in it
The "surf" leads: salmon, fish broth and salmon meal, with salmon oil and herring meal further down. The "turf" is chicken (the third ingredient) and duck meal, plus chicken fat and chicken liver. Dried egg product and cheese round out the protein side. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat.
There are no grains. The carbohydrates come from lentils, chickpeas, peas, potatoes and sweet potatoes, with pea flour and pea protein further down. Carrots, apples, broccoli, celery, cranberries and blueberries add variety, and Fromm includes a probiotic blend and chicory root extract to support digestion. With 30% protein and 18% fat minimum, it's a richer recipe.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy, active dog of any age who enjoys fish and poultry, including a large breed puppy, since Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages and large size growth. It's a good change of pace for a family that rotates proteins.
It isn't the right bag for a dog avoiding fish, chicken, duck, egg or dairy, or a family that prefers a grain-inclusive or lower-legume food. A less active dog may need the smaller portions, since it's calorie-dense. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

AAFCO statement
Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals® Surf & Turf Recipe Food for Dogs is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).
Calorie content
3,789 kcal/kg ... 1,722 kcal/lb ... 402 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Fromm's published daily amounts, by your dog's ideal weight. Split the total across two meals.
| Ideal weight | Less active adult | Active adult |
|---|---|---|
| 5 lb | ⅓ cup | ½ cup |
| 10 lb | ½ cup | ⅞ cup |
| 15 lb | ¾ cup | 1¼ cups |
| 20 lb | 1 cup | 1½ cups |
| 25 lb | 1⅛ cups | 1¾ cups |
| 30 lb | 1⅓ cups | 2 cups |
| 35 lb | 1½ cups | 2¼ cups |
| 40 lb | 1⅔ cups | 2½ cups |
| 45 lb | 1¾ cups | 2¾ cups |
| 50 lb | 1⅞ cups | 3 cups |
| 55 lb | 2 cups | 3¼ cups |
| 60 lb | 2¼ cups | 3⅓ cups |

| 70 lb | 2½ cups | 3¾ cups |
| 75 lb | 2⅔ cups | 4 cups |
| 80 lb | 2¾ cups | 4¼ cups |
| 85 lb | 2⅞ cups | 4⅓ cups |
| 90 lb | 3 cups | 4½ cups |
| 95 lb | 3⅛ cups | 4¾ cups |
| 100 lb | 3¼ cups | 5 cups |
These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Surf & Turf mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Surf & Turf. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 51 and 111 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3 cups a day, that's about 6 days, about 2 weeks, and about 5 weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
