Fromm Four-Star Shredded Beef in Gravy Wet Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Beef, beef broth, salmon oil.
- Contains: Beef ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Legumes (peas, pinto beans, kidney beans, white beans, green beans) ... Potatoes.

Shredded Beef in Gravy is the Four-Star can for the dog who wants to see real pieces in the bowl. Fromm Family Foods, a family-owned company based in Mequon, Wisconsin, describes it as a generous portion of shredded beef cooked in beef broth with potatoes, carrots and beans, made in small batches. It works as a full meal or spooned over kibble.
What's actually in it
Beef is the first ingredient and beef broth is the second, so the meat side is all beef. The only other animal ingredient is salmon oil, which adds omega fatty acids that Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Sunflower oil is the other added fat.
There are no grains. The rest of the can is potatoes, carrots, green beans, peas, and pinto, kidney and white beans, with a little tomato paste. Xanthan gum is what thickens the gravy. Vitamins and minerals, including chelated (proteinate) forms of zinc, iron, copper and manganese, round it out, and the oils are preserved with mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E).
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy dog of any age that does well on beef, from a puppy to a senior, and it's a handy pick for a household keeping chicken out of the bowl. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers growth of large size dogs, a large breed puppy can eat it too. Many families use it as a topper to make kibble more interesting.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. If you serve it alongside kibble, cut back on both so the day's total stays about the same. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Shredded Beef mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Shredded Beef. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how long a case lasts
Sold as a single 13 oz can or a case of 12 cans. For a 20 lb dog eating only this food, Fromm's chart calls for 1¼ cans a day, so a case of 12 lasts about nine or ten days. Fed as a topper over kibble, a case goes much further. Fromm's current listing shows a 12 oz can, and the calorie and feeding figures above are based on Fromm's can.
Storage
Store unopened cans somewhere cool and dry. Cover and refrigerate any unused portion and use it within a few days.
