Fromm Four-Star Pork & Applesauce Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Pork (pork, pork meat and bone meal, pork liver, pork fat), egg, salmon oil, cheese.
- Contains: Pork ... Egg ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Dairy (cheese) ... Grains (oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, white rice) ... Peas (peas, pea protein) ... Potatoes (potatoes, sweet potatoes).
- Does not contain: Chicken, beef, lamb, duck, corn, wheat, soy, lentils, chickpeas or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Chicken free, but not single protein. Pork is the only meat, yet egg, cheese and salmon oil are all in the recipe, and it includes peas even though it's a grain-inclusive food.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Pork & Applesauce is the comfort-food recipe of Fromm's Four-Star line... Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, pairs pork with apples, sweet potatoes and an assortment of fruits and vegetables over whole grains. It's one of the few Four-Star dry recipes with no chicken anywhere on the ingredient list.
What's actually in it
Pork leads, followed by pork meat and bone meal, with pork liver and pork fat further down, so pork is the only meat in the bag. Dried egg product and cheese add more protein, and salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. The "applesauce" is apples, listed as an ingredient in the recipe rather than an actual sauce.
The grains are oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice and white rice, alongside peas, pea protein, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Carrots, broccoli, cranberries and blueberries add variety. Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion, and preserves the food with mixed tocopherols and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy dog of any age, including a large breed puppy, since Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages and large size growth. It's a natural pick for a family looking for a grain-inclusive food with no chicken, beef or lamb on the label, or one that simply wants to rotate in a new protein.
It isn't the right bag for a dog avoiding pork, egg or dairy, or a family steering clear of peas. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

Calorie content
3,613 kcal/kg ... 1,642 kcal/lb ... 379 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Pork & Applesauce mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Pork & Applesauce. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 52 and 112 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3⅛ cups a day, that's about 5 days, about 2 weeks, and about 5 weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
