Fromm Four-Star Highlander Beef, Oats & Barley Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Beef (beef, beef broth, beef liver), lamb meal, haddock, dried egg product, chicken (chicken fat, chicken, chicken liver), salmon oil, cheese.
- Contains: Beef ... Lamb ... Fish (haddock, salmon oil) ... Chicken ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Grains (whole oats, whole barley, oatmeal, pearled barley) ... Potatoes (potatoes, sweet potatoes).
- Does not contain: Corn, wheat, rice, soy, peas, lentils, chickpeas, pork, turkey, duck or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a beef-only or chicken-free food. Lamb meal and haddock are the third and fourth ingredients, and chicken fat, chicken and chicken liver all appear further down.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers All Life Stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Highlander is the Four-Star bag for the dog who does best on beef and hearty grains. It pairs beef with oats and barley, skips rice, corn and wheat, and contains no peas or lentils. Fromm labels it for dogs of every age.
What's actually in it
Beef leads, followed by beef broth, then lamb meal and haddock. Lamb meal is lamb with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Dried egg product, chicken fat, beef liver, chicken, cheese and chicken liver round out the protein and fat side, so beef is the headliner but not the only meat.
The grains are oats and barley four ways: whole oats, whole barley, oatmeal and pearled barley, with potatoes, pumpkin and sweet potatoes alongside. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat. Fromm also adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. The preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy dog who enjoys beef, families who want a grain-inclusive food without rice, corn or wheat, and anyone hoping to avoid peas and lentils. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs, it can also be fed to a growing puppy.
It isn't the right bag for a dog avoiding chicken, fish, egg or dairy, since all four are in it, or one that needs a grain-free food. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

3,696 kcal/kg ... 1,680 kcal/lb ... 388 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need considerably more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Highlander mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Highlander. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 52 and 112 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3 cups a day, that's about six days, about two weeks, and about five weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
