Fromm Four-Star Hasen Duckenpfeffer Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Rabbit (rabbit, rabbit meal), duck (duck, duck meal), pork (pork, pork meat & bone meal, pork liver, pork fat), dried egg product, salmon oil, cheese.
- Contains: Rabbit ... Duck ... Pork ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Legumes (chickpeas, lentils, peas, pea flour, pea protein) ... Potatoes.
- Does not contain: Chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, grains, soy or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a rabbit-and-duck-only food. Pork is the third ingredient and appears four ways in total, so it carries as much weight as the rabbit and duck. It is free of chicken.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers All Life Stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Hasen Duckenpfeffer is the Four-Star recipe people remember by name. It's a grain-free food that leads with rabbit and duck, two proteins a lot of dogs haven't tried, and adds pork alongside them. Fromm labels it for dogs of every age.
What's actually in it
Rabbit and duck are the first two ingredients, followed by pork and pork meat & bone meal. Duck meal and rabbit meal appear further down, along with pork liver and pork fat. Meals are meat with the water cooked out, so they add concentrated protein by weight. Dried egg product and cheese round out the protein side.
There are no grains in this recipe. The carbohydrates come from chickpeas, lentils, peas, potatoes and pea flour, with pea protein adding to the protein total. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. The preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid. "Natural flavor" is listed without a named source.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a dog who does well on less common proteins, families looking for a chicken-free food, and households that prefer grain-free. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs, it can also be fed to a growing puppy.
It isn't the right bag for a dog avoiding pork, egg, dairy or fish oil, or one that needs to limit legumes. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

3,729 kcal/kg ... 1,695 kcal/lb ... 395 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need considerably more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Hasen Duckenpfeffer mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Hasen Duckenpfeffer. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 51 and 111 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3 cups a day, that's about six days, about two weeks, and about five weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
