Fromm Four-Star Grain Free Salmon Tunalini Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Salmon (salmon, salmon meal, salmon oil), chicken fat, tuna, dried egg product, chicken liver, sardine meal, cheese.
- Contains: Fish (salmon, tuna, sardine) ... Chicken (chicken fat, chicken liver) ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Legumes (peas, lentils, pinto beans, chickpeas) ... Potatoes.
- Does not contain: Grains, beef, pork, lamb, turkey, duck, soy or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a chicken-free food. It reads like a seafood recipe, but chicken fat is the seventh ingredient and chicken liver follows a few spots later. A dog avoiding chicken should skip this one.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers All Life Stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Salmon Tunalini is Fromm's seafood take on the Four-Star line: salmon first, tuna and sardine further in, and a grain-free base of peas, lentils and beans. Fromm labels it for dogs of every age.
What's actually in it
Salmon leads as fresh salmon and salmon meal, which is salmon with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Tuna, sardine meal and salmon oil add to the fish side. Chicken fat, chicken liver, dried egg product and cheese are also in the recipe, so this is seafood-forward rather than seafood-only.
There are no grains here. The carbohydrates come from peas, lentils, pinto beans, potatoes and chickpeas, with zucchini, carrots, apples and broccoli further down. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. The preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid. "Natural flavor" is listed without a named source.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a dog who loves fish and does well on legumes, and families who prefer a grain-free food. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs, it can also be fed to a growing puppy.
It isn't the right bag for a dog avoiding chicken, egg or dairy, or one that needs to limit peas, lentils and beans. Calorie content
3,658 kcal/kg ... 1,663 kcal/lb ... 388 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need considerably more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Salmon Tunalini mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Salmon Tunalini. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 51 and 111 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3 cups a day, that's about six days, about two weeks, and about five weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
