Fromm Four-Star Grain Free Lamb & Lentil Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Lamb (lamb, lamb meal, lamb liver), dried egg product, pork fat, pork liver, salmon oil, cheese.
- Contains: Lamb ... Pork ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, peas, pea flour).
- Does not contain: Chicken, beef, turkey, duck, grains, potatoes, sweet potatoes, soy or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a lamb-only food. Pork fat and pork liver appear just after the egg, ahead of the lamb liver, so a dog avoiding pork should skip this one. It is free of chicken.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers All Life Stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Lamb & Lentil is a grain-free Four-Star recipe that keeps things fairly simple: lamb up front, legumes for the carbohydrates, and no chicken anywhere on the list. Fromm labels it for dogs of every age.
What's actually in it
Lamb leads twice, as fresh lamb and lamb meal, with lamb liver further down. Lamb meal is lamb with the water cooked out, so it adds concentrated protein by weight. Dried egg product, pork fat, pork liver and cheese round out the protein and fat side.
There are no grains here, and unlike many grain-free foods there are no potatoes either. The carbohydrates come from lentils, chickpeas, peas and pea flour, with carrots, apples, broccoli and cauliflower further down. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. The preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid. "Natural flavor" is also listed, without a named source.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a dog who does well on lamb, families looking for a chicken-free and potato-free option, and households that prefer a grain-free food. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs, it can also be fed to a growing puppy.
It isn't the right bag for a dog avoiding pork, egg or dairy, or one that needs to steer clear of peas and lentils, since legumes make up the whole carbohydrate side. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

Calorie content
3,757 kcal/kg ... 1,708 kcal/lb ... 398 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.
Feeding guidelines
Fromm's published daily amounts, by your dog's ideal weight. Split the total across two meals.

| 10 lb | ½ cup | ⅞ cup |
| 15 lb | ¾ cup | 1⅛ cups |

| 25 lb | 1⅛ cups | 1⅔ cups |
| 30 lb | 1¼ cups | 2 cups |
| 35 lb | 1½ cups | 2¼ cups |
| 40 lb | 1⅔ cups | 2½ cups |

| 85 lb | 2¾ cups | 4¼ cups |

| 95 lb | 3 cups | 4⅔ cups |
| 100 lb | 3⅛ cups | 4¾ cups |
These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need considerably more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Lamb & Lentil mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Lamb & Lentil. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 51 and 111 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 2⅞ cups a day, that's about three weeks and about six weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
