Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Turkey (turkey, turkey broth, turkey liver), duck (duck meal, duck), chicken (chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken), dried egg product, salmon oil, goose, cheese, pheasant, quail.
- Contains: Turkey ... Duck ... Chicken ... Goose ... Pheasant ... Quail ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, peas, pea flour, pea protein) ... Potatoes (potatoes, sweet potatoes).

Game Bird is the Four-Star bag for the dog who likes a little variety from the poultry yard. It's a grain-free recipe built on turkey and duck, with goose, pheasant and quail added further down, and Fromm labels it for dogs of every age.
What's actually in it
Turkey leads, followed by duck meal and turkey broth, with turkey liver, chicken meal, chicken fat, dried egg product, goose and chicken following. Duck meal and chicken meal are simply meat with the water cooked out, so they add concentrated protein by weight. Pheasant, quail and a second listing of duck sit near the middle, after the cheese and flaxseed.
There are no grains in this recipe. The carbohydrates come from lentils, chickpeas, peas and potatoes, plus pea flour, pea protein, sweet potatoes and pumpkin. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. The preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid. The list also includes "natural flavor," which Fromm does not break down by source.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy dog who enjoys poultry and does well on legumes, and families who prefer a grain-free food. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs, it can also be fed to a growing puppy.

Calorie content
3,709 kcal/kg ... 1,686 kcal/lb ... 393 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need considerably more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Game Bird mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Game Bird. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 51 and 111 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3 cups a day, that's about six days, about two weeks, and about five weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
