Fromm Four-Star Grain Free Chicken Au Frommage Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken liver), egg, cheese, salmon oil.
- Contains: Chicken ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Legumes (chickpeas, lentils, peas) ... Potatoes and sweet potatoes.
- Does not contain: Grains of any kind (no corn, wheat, rice, barley or oats), soy, beef, pork or yeast (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Legumes come right after the chicken. Chickpeas, lentils and peas are ingredients three, four and five, ahead of potatoes and the rest of the recipe. If you're avoiding legume-heavy foods, this isn't the bag. It is also not a chicken-free food.

Chicken Au Frommage is Fromm's French-inspired take on a chicken dinner: chicken, cheese and a handful of fruits and vegetables, made without grain. It's part of the Four-Star line from Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin, where the idea is variety... recipes you can rotate between without starting over. This is the grain-free chicken option in that lineup, and the cheese is what makes picky eaters perk up.
What's actually in it
Chicken leads twice, as fresh chicken and chicken meal. Chicken meal is chicken with the water cooked out, so it packs more protein by weight. Dried egg product, cheese and chicken liver add to the protein side, and chicken fat and salmon oil supply most of the fat.
Instead of grain, the carbohydrates come from chickpeas, lentils and peas, followed by potatoes and sweet potatoes. Pears, apples, broccoli, cranberries, blueberries and parsley make smaller appearances further down. Flaxseed and salmon oil add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm also adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion. The only preservatives are mixed tocopherols (a natural source of vitamin E) and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy dog who loves chicken and cheese, and families who have chosen a grain-free food. Because Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including large breed growth, the same bag can feed a puppy and the grown-ups in the house.

3,702 kcal/kg ... 1,683 kcal/lb ... 392 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Chicken Au Frommage mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Chicken Au Frommage. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 51 and 111 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3 cups a day, that's about two and a half weeks and about five weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
