Fromm Four-Star Duck À La Veg Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Duck (duck, duck meal), chicken (chicken, chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken liver), egg, salmon oil, cheese.
- Contains: Duck ... Chicken ... Fish (salmon oil) ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Grains (oatmeal, brown rice, pearled barley, white rice, millet, whole oats, whole barley) ... Sweet potatoes ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Corn, wheat, soy, peas, lentils, chickpeas, beef, pork or lamb (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Not a duck-only food. Duck leads, but chicken is the third ingredient, and chicken meal, chicken fat and chicken liver follow. This is not a choice for a dog avoiding chicken.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Duck À La Veg is a grain-inclusive Four-Star recipe from Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin. Fromm describes it as an entrée with duck, sweet potatoes and an assortment of fruits and vegetables, and it's a nice way to give a dog who enjoys poultry a different flavor in the bowl without leaving whole grains behind.
What's actually in it
Duck and duck meal are the first two ingredients, so duck really does lead. Right behind them, though, come chicken and later chicken meal, chicken fat and chicken liver, so the recipe is a duck and chicken blend. Dried egg product and cheese add a bit more protein, and salmon oil and flaxseed bring omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat.
The carbohydrates are a mix of grains: oatmeal, brown rice, pearled barley, white rice, millet, whole oats and whole barley, plus sweet potatoes. Carrots, apples, broccoli, cauliflower, cranberries and blueberries round out the "à la veg" part. Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion, and preserves the food with mixed tocopherols and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy dog of any age who does well on poultry and grains, including a large breed puppy, since Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages and large size growth. It's a good pick for a family that likes to change up proteins while staying with a grain-inclusive food.
It isn't the right bag for a dog avoiding chicken, egg, dairy or fish, since all four are in it, and it isn't a limited ingredient diet. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

3,652 kcal/kg ... 1,660 kcal/lb ... 387 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Duck À La Veg mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Duck À La Veg. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 51 and 111 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3 cups a day, that's just under a week, about 2 weeks, and about 5 weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
