Fromm Four-Star Chicken À La Veg Dry Dog Food
Know Before You Buy
- Animal proteins in this recipe: Chicken (chicken, chicken broth, chicken meal, chicken fat, chicken liver, chicken cartilage), menhaden fish meal, egg, salmon oil, cheese.
- Contains: Chicken ... Fish ... Egg ... Dairy (cheese) ... Grains (oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, white rice, whole oats, whole barley, millet) ... Potatoes (sweet potatoes, potatoes) ... Yeast.
- Does not contain: Corn, wheat, soy, peas, lentils, chickpeas, beef, pork, lamb or duck (per the manufacturer's ingredient list).
- Chicken plus fish. Menhaden fish meal is the ninth ingredient, ahead of the egg and chicken fat, so a dog avoiding fish should skip this one even though the name says chicken.
- Life stage: Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).
Chicken À La Veg is the classic poultry recipe in Fromm's Four-Star line, made by Fromm Family Foods, the family-owned company in Mequon, Wisconsin. Fromm calls it an entrée of chicken, chicken broth and sweet potatoes with an assortment of fruits and vegetables, built on whole grains... a dependable everyday choice for a dog who loves chicken.
What's actually in it
Chicken leads three ways: chicken, chicken broth and chicken meal, with chicken fat, chicken liver and chicken cartilage further down. Menhaden fish meal, dried egg product and cheese add more protein. Salmon oil and flaxseed bring omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat.
The grains are oatmeal, pearled barley, brown rice, white rice, whole oats, whole barley and millet, joined by sweet potatoes and potatoes. Carrots, apples, broccoli, celery, cranberries and blueberries give the recipe its name. Fromm adds a probiotic blend and chicory root extract, which they include to support digestion, and preserves the food with mixed tocopherols and sorbic acid.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits a healthy dog of any age that does well on chicken and grains, including a large breed puppy, since Fromm's AAFCO statement covers all life stages and large size growth. It's also a natural step for a family coming from Fromm Gold who wants a bit more variety in fruits and vegetables.
It isn't the right bag for a dog avoiding chicken, fish, egg or dairy, since all four are in it. If you're unsure, our Personal Pet Consultant is happy to help ... call 732-938-4470.

Calorie content
3,706 kcal/kg ... 1,684 kcal/lb ... 389 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that puppies, and dogs that are pregnant or nursing, may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered dogs may need up to 25% less. Check your dog's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.
Switching over
Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Chicken À La Veg mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Chicken À La Veg. Going slowly gives your dog's stomach time to adjust.
Sizes, and how many cups you get
4 lb, 12 lb and 26 lb bags, which hold roughly 17, 52 and 112 level cups. For a 50 lb active adult eating 3 cups a day, that's about 6 days, about 2 weeks, and about 5 weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.
Storage
Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
