Gold Indoor Cat Hairball Control is built for the cat whose whole world is the living room... plenty of grooming, plenty of naps, and not much running around. Fromm designed it for normally active adult cats, with a unique fiber blend that Fromm includes to aid in hairball management.

What's actually in it

Chicken and chicken meal come first, then brown rice, pearled barley and oatmeal, with salmon meal, dried egg product and chicken liver close behind. Duck appears later in the list. Protein is a 32% minimum and fat a 15% minimum.

The fiber side is what sets this recipe apart. Miscanthus grass, psyllium seed husk, beet pulp, flaxseed and alfalfa make up the blend Fromm includes for hairball management. Salmon oil and flaxseed add omega fatty acids, which Fromm includes to support skin and coat, and Fromm also adds cranberries, dried kelp, L-carnitine, taurine, chicken cartilage, chicory root extract and a probiotic blend, which they include to support digestion. Preservatives are mixed tocopherols and sorbic acid.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits an indoor adult cat with no known food sensitivities, especially a dedicated groomer, in a home that's fine with a grain-inclusive food. If your indoor cat also needs to trim down, Gold Healthy Weight is the lower-calorie option in the same line.

It isn't for kittens, since Fromm's AAFCO statement is for adult maintenance only, and it isn't for a cat avoiding chicken, fish or egg. Calorie content

3,602 kcal/kg ... 1,637 kcal/lb ... 389 kcal per cup. A cup means a standard 8-fluid-ounce dry measuring cup, filled level. It measures volume, not 8 ounces by weight, so scoop it rather than weigh it.

Feeding guidelines

Fromm's published daily amounts, by your cat's ideal weight. Split the total across two or more meals.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Fromm notes that kittens weighing less than four pounds and/or younger than six weeks should be fed free choice, kittens and pregnant or nursing cats may need two to four times more food, and spayed or neutered cats may need up to 25% less. Check your cat's body condition after two or three weeks... ribs easy to feel under a thin layer, a gentle waist visible from above... and adjust. Always keep fresh water out.

Switching over

Change foods gradually over about a week. Start with roughly a quarter Gold Indoor mixed into the old food, move to half, then three quarters, then all Gold Indoor. Going slowly gives your cat's stomach time to adjust, and cats in particular tend to accept a new food more readily when it's introduced a little at a time.

Sizes, and how many cups you get

4 lb and 10 lb bags, which hold roughly 17 and 42 level cups. For a 10 lb cat eating ⅔ cup a day, that's about three and a half weeks and nine weeks respectively. Cup counts are worked out from Fromm's published calorie figures and are close estimates, since kibble settles as a bag is handled.

Storage

Keep the food in its original bag, rolled down tight, somewhere cool and dry. If you use a bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than pouring the kibble in, so the lot number stays with the food.
