Summer Dog Walking Hacks: Early Hours, Cool Routes & Hydration Tricks

All Posts

If your dog gives you that “you MUST be joking” look when you suggest a midday walk in July, congratulations — they are the reasonable one in this relationship. Summer walks require strategy, timing, and a solid plan to avoid overheated pups.

Walk early or late. Sunrise and sunset are prime time. The pavement is cooler, the air is gentler, and your dog won’t immediately turn into a panting potato. If your pup needs space to run before the heat spikes, swing by The Hungry Puppy’s free dog park early in the morning when shade still covers the play areas.

Choose cool routes. Shady neighborhoods, wooded trails, and grassy paths are far safer than open asphalt. Stick to lighter-colored sidewalks, avoid metal surfaces, and check pavement temperature with your hand before letting your dog step on it.

Hydrate strategically. Bring collapsible bowls or portable bottles. Offer small sips often rather than full gulps. Cats who walk on harnesses (the brave few!) need the same care — plus a shady spot to retreat if they get too warm.

Slow the pace. Dogs don’t need power walks in July — they need sniff walks and gentle movement. Allow them to explore scents along the way. Sniffing mentally tires dogs out and is far safer than high-intensity activity in the heat.

Summer walking isn’t about distance — it’s about comfort, safety, and connection.
