Small Pet Care in Hot Weather: Rabbits, Guinea Pigs & Friends

All Posts

When we think of summer heat, we often picture panting dogs or cats sprawled in the shade — but small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and ferrets are even more sensitive to rising temperatures. Because they can’t sweat or pant effectively, a few hours in the wrong spot can cause real distress.

Keeping them comfortable starts with location. Move cages and enclosures away from direct sunlight and windows where the heat builds up fast. A room with steady airflow is best, but avoid placing fans directly on your pets. The goal is gentle circulation, not drafts.

Water is your next defense. Small animals lose moisture quickly, so refill bottles and bowls often, and make sure the water stays cool. Dropping a couple of ice cubes into a ceramic dish can be a welcome relief during hot afternoons.

Inside their habitats, give them cooling options — a chilled ceramic tile or a frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel creates a simple cooling station they can snuggle near. Choosing lightweight, breathable bedding instead of heavy fleece also makes a big difference in temperature control.

Even with these measures, it’s important to watch closely for signs of heat stress. Rapid breathing, drooling, or unusual stillness are early warnings that your pet needs help cooling down right away.

At The Hungry Puppy, we carry the essentials to keep small pets comfortable — fresh bedding, nutritious food, safe chews, and enrichment toys to keep them entertained indoors. With a few mindful adjustments, your littlest family members can enjoy a safe and happy summer, too.
