Monthly Pet Check-In: Coat, Paws, Teeth, Allergies & Mood Review

All Posts

The end of March brings a perfect opportunity to evaluate how your pets handled the transition from winter to spring. Seasonal shifts affect coats, paws, mood, hydration, and overall behavior. A monthly check-in allows you to spot small issues before spring busyness picks up.

Start with the coat. Dogs and cats entering full shedding mode may develop mats or loose hair buildup. Check for hot spots, dry patches, or flaky skin. For horses or goats, early shedding patterns reveal whether nutrition or grooming routines need adjustment.

Review paw condition. March mud, melting snow, and early pollen can irritate paws. Look for cracks, redness, or excess licking. Chickens benefit from dry coop bedding, and goats appreciate solid footing in barns to prevent soft hooves.

Check dental and gum health. Spring means more chewing and more outdoor play, but it’s also the post–dental-month slump. Lift lips, check breath, and assess tartar. Small animals like rabbits or guinea pigs need tooth checks too.

Observe mood and behavior. Are pets more energetic? More anxious with storms? Less interested in winter routines? Seasonal transitions often bring new moods. Adjust enrichment and exercise accordingly.

If your monthly check-in reveals any gear that needs refreshing—brushes, paw balms, dental treats, seasonal supplements—The Hungry Puppy has everything you need to start April strong. Small monthly habits keep pets healthy year-round.
