Is Your Dog Beach-Ready? Safety Tips for Shore Adventures

All Posts

There’s nothing better than a day at the Jersey Shore with your best friend by your side — wagging tail, paws in the sand, and salty air all around. But before you head to the beach, make sure your dog is truly beach-ready.

1. Check pet-friendly beaches. Not every shoreline allows dogs year-round. Many NJ beaches have time or leash restrictions, so always double-check local rules before heading out.

2. Prep for the sun. Just like us, dogs can get sunburned — especially short-haired or light-skinned breeds. Apply pet-safe sunscreen to ears, nose, and belly, and bring a shaded umbrella or pop-up tent for breaks.

3. Hydration is key. Saltwater isn’t safe for drinking, and heat can sneak up quickly. Bring plenty of fresh water and a collapsible bowl.

4. Protect those paws. Hot sand can burn paw pads. Test it with your own hand — if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.

5. Keep an eye on waves. Even strong swimmers can tire easily in the surf. Use a canine life vest for safety and avoid strong currents.

6. Rinse after play. Salt and sand can irritate skin and paws. Rinse your dog with fresh water before heading home to remove residue and reduce itchiness.

Before you pack your tote, stop by The Hungry Puppy in Farmingdale for beach-day essentials — travel bowls, cooling mats, sun-protective gear, and natural paw balms. Our team can help you choose what fits your dog’s breed and beach style best.

A little prep goes a long way toward making your day at the shore safe, fun, and full of sandy smiles.
