Fly Season Peak: Protecting Dogs, Cats & Barn Animals from Summer Swarms

All Posts

July flies don’t politely mind their own business — they swarm, buzz, bite, and generally act like tiny flying villains. Horses stomp, goats shake their heads, chickens squawk, dogs snap at the air, and cats give you that “fix this immediately” stare. Keeping pests at bay requires a multi-layer strategy.

Start with environment control. Remove manure, clean trash areas, and refresh water buckets often. Flies love stagnant, warm spaces. Barns benefit from strong airflow — fans drastically reduce fly traffic.

Use physical barriers. Fly masks, sheets, and ear bonnets protect horses and goats. Screens, mesh doors, and shade cloths help pets lounging indoors or in catios. If you need fly masks or sprays, The Hungry Puppy stocks farm and pet supplies tailored for July pests.

Rotate repellents. Natural sprays, chemical formulas, fly traps, sticky ribbons hung high, and yard-safe granules each serve a purpose. Rotate methods to reduce resistance.

Protect your pets. Dogs with sensitive skin may develop hot spots from fly bites. Cats may swat or hide. Chickens need clean coops and dust baths to keep pests from settling in.

July is peak pest month — but with the right tools, you can reclaim your yard and barn from the buzz brigade.
