DIY Sniff Games: Low-Effort Nose Work for Cold Weather

All Posts

Nose work is one of the easiest and most rewarding activities to do with pets in the winter. Whether you share your home with a curious dog, a clever cat, or even treat-motivated rabbits, sniff games tap into natural instincts and burn mental energy. When the outdoors is icy or your schedule is tight, indoor scent work becomes a lifesaver.

Start with simple “treat hunts.” Scatter a handful of kibble or small treats in a single room and let your pet search freely. Keep the area safe and clutter-free so the game stays fun, not overwhelming. Even barn cats enjoy sniff-based games when storms push them indoors.

Make the challenge gradually harder. Hide treats behind table legs, under lightweight lids, or inside a loosely crumpled towel. Chickens and goats also enjoy safe foraging enrichment—tossing scratch into straw bedding or hiding pellets in hay encourages natural searching behaviors and keeps them mentally engaged during cold snaps.

Use boxes for problem-solving. Arrange a few cardboard boxes and hide a reward in one. Pets love the investigation process—the sniffing, pawing, and checking each box. Rotate box positions each time to keep the activity fresh. Cats especially thrive when allowed to “hunt” in a controlled environment.

Incorporate scent toys or infused items. Silvervine sticks for cats, nose work containers for dogs, and hay-based foraging toys for rabbits all bring variety. scent-friendly items encourage pets to use their strongest sense even when stuck indoors.

If you’d like nose work toys, snuffle mats, or foraging supplies for multiple species, The Hungry Puppy carries enrichment options for dogs, cats, small animals, and even poultry. Mental stimulation turns winter days from boring to brilliant.
