Cool Treats, Warm Hearts: Homemade Snacks for Late Summer

August afternoons can feel endless, especially for pets lounging while we juggle chores. A homemade treat can change that — cooling, simple, and fun for the whole family to make. These snacks aren’t fancy; they’re thoughtful gestures in edible form.

For dogs, try frozen yogurt bites made from plain yogurt and mashed banana. Spoon the mix into silicone molds, freeze, and you’ll have bite-sized relief ready to go. Cats enjoy chilled tuna purées — just blend tuna with water, freeze in small cubes, and serve sparingly.

Rabbits and guinea pigs love chilled veggie skewers: cucumber slices, carrot curls, or tiny apple pieces (no seeds!) stored in the fridge for a crisp crunch. Birds enjoy frozen fruit chunks — grapes or berries thawed just enough to nibble.

Always check ingredient safety — what’s healthy for one species can harm another. No added sugar, salt, or artificial sweeteners, and when in doubt, call your vet.

Homemade treats are about connection, not perfection. Kids can help mix, scoop, and freeze, learning care through creativity. On weekends, let them serve the finished treats and see tails wag or wings flutter in approval.

If DIY isn’t your thing, The Hungry Puppy has a great lineup of ready-made cooling treats and frozen snacks that are just as wholesome — no mixing bowls required. They’re made with safe ingredients, pet-approved flavors, and available in-store or for local delivery.

August heat won’t last forever, but the memory of those joyful, sticky, slightly messy treat-making afternoons absolutely will.
