Chickens in June: Heat Stress, Dust Baths & Coop Ventilation

All Posts

If your chickens are standing with their wings spread, panting like tiny feathered dragons, that’s their way of saying, “It’s too hot, human!” June heat hits flocks fast, and backyard chickens need strategic cooling before midsummer truly arrives. A few small adjustments keep them comfortable and productive through the warmest months.

Start with ventilation. June is the time to open upper vents, widen windows with hardware cloth, and promote airflow while keeping predators out. Good airflow removes ammonia and humidity—two silent enemies of respiratory health. Never create low drafts; aim for high, roof-level ventilation.

Provide dust baths. Dust baths help chickens cool down, control parasites, and look fabulously ridiculous. A shady dust bath area filled with sand, dry soil, and a sprinkle of food-grade DE (optional) keeps plumage healthy. Goats love dust baths too—but don’t tell the chickens.

Hydration is critical. Refill waterers multiple times a day. Add ice blocks, shade, or chilled electrolytes during heat waves. If water sits in direct sun, it heats faster than you think. (Keeping a spare set of clean waterers in rotation is a pro move.)

Monitor heat stress signs. Panting, drooping wings, lethargy, pale combs, and reduced activity all require immediate cooling efforts. Shade cloths, misters, frozen veggies, or wetting shady dirt patches help.

If you need layer feed, electrolytes, hardware cloth, coop fans, or summer bedding, The Hungry Puppy has hot-weather essentials for poultry—and our Frequent Buyers Program saves money on feed you’re buying regularly anyway.
