July heat hits chickens harder than many owners realize. Chickens can’t sweat, and their feather insulation becomes a liability in extreme temperatures. Keeping your flock cool requires proactive planning — and a few frozen veggie tricks.
Shade is nonnegotiable. Provide trees, umbrellas, shade cloths, or roofed areas. Add multiple shade spots to reduce crowding. If you need shade cloth or coop cooling supplies, The Hungry Puppy carries poultry-friendly summer gear.
Cooling treats work wonders. Frozen watermelon chunks, frozen peas in a shallow dish, or icy cabbage slices help birds lower their body temperature while having fun. Chickens truly think frozen treats are gourmet dining.
Improve airflow. Open upper vents, add fans (out of pecking reach), and swap damp bedding. Humidity builds fast in July, so ventilation makes a huge difference.
Watch for heat stress. Panting, wings spread, pale combs, and lethargy mean chickens need immediate cooling. Offer cool water, move them to shade, and limit handling.
July is tough on poultry — but with the right setup, your flock will handle the heat like pros.
