Car Safety in Summer: Cracked Windows Aren’t Enough (Here’s Why)

All Posts

If you’ve ever thought, “It’s fine, I’ll only be a minute,” just know every vet in the country felt a disturbance in the force. Summer car heat is no joke — and cracked windows do almost nothing to stop temperatures from skyrocketing inside the car. June is when heatstroke cases from parked cars begin to spike, even on mild days.

Here’s the scary truth: on a 75-degree day, the inside of a car can reach 100 degrees in 10 minutes. On an 85-degree day? You’re flirting with 120+. And it doesn’t matter if you parked in the shade or left the windows “open a little.” Dogs and cats overheat fast, especially brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Persians).

Plan ahead for errands. If the trip isn’t pet-friendly, leave them home in AC. For dog-friendly runs, bring a travel kit: water, collapsible bowl, shade cloth, and a cooling mat. You can grab all of these at The Hungry Puppy, and our Personal Pet Consultant can help build your perfect summer car kit.

Never rely on timing. Traffic, long lines, and unexpected delays turn “a minute” into fifteen. Heatstroke can begin long before your pet looks distressed.

Know the signs. Heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, vomiting, or sudden collapse require immediate action: move your pet to AC, apply cool (not ice-cold) water to paws and belly, and call a vet.

Quick Tip: If you wouldn’t leave ice cream in your car, don’t leave your pet there either.

Summer car safety isn’t dramatic — it’s lifesaving.
