Backyard Pests: Wasps, Hornets, Ticks & Hidden Summer Stingers

All Posts

If your dog has ever stuck their nose into a bush only to sprint backward like they were attacked by a tiny airborne ninja, they may have discovered one of July’s many pests. Summer stingers and biters show up everywhere — and curious pets are their favorite audience.

Wasps and hornets build nests in eaves, grill covers, outdoor furniture, and even mailbox posts. Dogs investigating these areas can get stung quickly. Cats batting at flying insects learn the hard way that not everything that moves is a toy.

Ticks remain active in shaded areas and long grass — especially along fence lines. Chickens help reduce ticks but can’t eliminate them entirely. Regular tick checks are essential. If you’re unsure which preventative is best, The Hungry Puppy’s Personal Pet Consultant can help narrow your options for dogs, cats, and even livestock.

Watch for hidden hazards. Yellow jackets nest underground and can erupt if disturbed. Fire ants (in some areas) become aggressive in warm, damp soil. Even innocent-looking bees can become territorial in July’s heat.

Keep the yard clean. Remove food waste, seal trash, clean grills, and empty kiddie pools and birdbaths regularly. Pests love standing water and food smells.

Summer is full of tiny villains — staying aware helps avoid painful encounters.
