Orders placed on this website are shipped via UPS or USPS for items deemed as free shipping. If you live in our area and would like to receive an order via our local delivery trucks, please contact us at the retail store. In order for us to keep our pricing competitive with other internet sites, we are unable to give any further discounts.
Damaged Product Box
If you receive damaged products, please save the product and the original box and packaging and notify The Hungry Puppy Customer Service Department immediately to arrange for a carrier inspection and a pick up of damaged products. Please notify The Hungry Puppy Customer Service of the damaged products WITHIN THE FIRST 5 DAYS of receipt. Timely receipt of this information is necessary for The Hungry Puppy to file a damage claim with UPS. Damaged merchandise will only be exchanged for the exact same product.
Non-Damaged/Defective, Unopened Merchandise within 10 days of Original Purchase Date
If you have non-defective merchandise which is unopened, we will issue you an RMA # and will give you an address to ship the product to at your expense. The item(s) must be in resalable condition in order to receive a refund. Return shipping to us is at your expense.
Non-Damaged/Defective, Opened Merchandise
You must receive prior approval before returning. You may incur 20% restocking fee for such products.
If you have received defective merchandise you must contact The Hungry Puppy within 10 days for replacement of defective merchandise with the exact same product. After 10 days, you will have to contact the manufacturer directly.
All return products must have an RMA number or the return will be refused at our warehouse.
To receive an RMA:
- Please contact The Hungry Puppy Customer Service to obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before shipping product back to us. Please do not call for a RMA number, requests must be made through Customer Service online. This will expedite and help ensure the proper action or credit upon processing.
- In order to expedite a return, please include the following information: Customer name, invoice number, reason for return, and whether the box has been opened or is manufacturer sealed.
- Please return all products 100% complete. RMA approval is contingent upon, among other things, the products being 100% complete.
- In the return box, include a copy of your invoice and write on the outside of the box your RMA number.
- Customer is responsible for shipping charges to The Hungry Puppy's distribution center for all products being shipped for return.
- Customer is responsible for all risk of loss and damage to products being shipped for return. Please fully insure return shipment in case of loss or damage. Please use a carrier that is able to provide you with proof of delivery such as UPS or Federal Express. This is for your protection as well as to ensure the returned merchandise is received in an expedient manner.
- Dog apparel is non-refundable.
- Purchases originally made with a credit card will only be refunded through the credit card used for the original purchase. Payments made through Paypal will be refunded through PayPal.
- Shipping costs are not refundable.
- Please allow 14 days to process your refund once product has been received.
- Customer is responsible for returning damaged or defective merchandise to The Hungry Puppy.
- The Hungry Puppy will not ship replacement merchandise until receipt of damaged or defective item.
- All defective or damaged returns are subject to verification.
Failure to return a product within the return period will be deemed to be an acceptance of the product.

You are able to calculate what your shipping costs before you purchase products. To do this, add the products into your shopping cart. Click the "Calculate Shipping" button located in the middle of the screen. Enter in your shipping zip code and hit the Enter key. Costs are calculated according to UPS's weight-based rates.
We ship Tuesday through Friday via UPS.
We only ship to the continental United States. We currently do no ship to Puerto Rico, Hawaii or Alaska. Sorry!
Orders received before 8am EST will be shipped out the same day. Occasionally, we are out of stock on a item. If the item is expected in within 1-2 days, we may hold the order for completeness. We will either call or email you if there is something else we can substitute. If we can not substitute, we will ship out the item as soon as it is back in stock.
Not only are prices fair at The Hungry Puppy, but so are our shipping charges. Unlike other online retailers, we charge actual shipping according to the weight of your order. We do not inflate prices to state we have "Free Shipping". Shipping is calculated according to the UPS's current weight shipping chart. An actual street address is needed, as UPS does not ship to PO Boxes or APO addresses.
***Please double check your shipping address. Failure to provide the correct shipping address will result in the product being returned to us. We will cancel and credit your order minus the shipping charges received from UPS (going and returning). If we are able to contact you and get a correct shipping address from you, we will charge you the current UPS correction fee.***
Free Shipping items can not be shipped to Alaska, Puerto Rico or Hawaii
Orders that include a special ordered item will be held until the item is in stock. If you do not want your order held, please order the special order product separately.
If you are a local customer (Monmouth, and parts of Ocean & Middlesex Counties) and would like to order items for home delivery via our local delivery truck, please contact the retail store at 732-938-4470. Orders placed online will incur UPS shipping costs. Prices may or may not be the same in the retail store and on the website.
Occasionally, we are out of stock on products that are available for purchase online. We will contact you by the phone number listed on your invoice in order to inform you of this out of stock product and the expected time the item will be available for shipment. If the product states on the description that it is currently out stock, the entire order will be held until that particular item is back in stock. If you do not wish to have your entire order held until complete, please order the items separately.
For items totaling less than $10.00, we will call and email you of the out of stock products. If we do not hear from you by the end of our shipping day for a substitution (3:00pm ET), we will cancel the backordered item and credit your credit card/Paypal accordingly. For us to remain competitive as a low cost provider, it is not cost effective for us to ship these items separately once these items are back in stock.
After you order, print out a copy of your invoice. Mail in the invoice with the coupons to the address on your invoice.
- Coupons must be received within 20 days from date on invoice
- Must be in-date
- Coupon must match the exact item purchased and be reflected on invoice
- Amount credited will not be higher than price paid
- Only one coupon per item
- Reimbursement will be applied to your original payment method
Sorry, coupons that are out of date and/or do not match the products purchased will be destroyed and not returned.

Q: How can you charge less than other retailers?
A: We've been in business since 1987. The Hungry Puppy is one of the largest independently owned retail pet supply companies in the country. Since we are afforded the opportunity to buy in large quantities, combined with our low overhead expenses, the cost savings are passed on to our customers.
Q: Why no "free shipping"?
A: Unlike other online retailers that pad their price to claim free shipping, we feel it's only fair to charge shipping costs based on the total weight of your order. This is then fair to everyone. We are able to offer some items for free shipping. These items may be shipped via USPS due to their light weight
Q: Can I get a volume discount?
A: In order for us to maintain our prices so low, we cannot offer any further discounts.
Q: Can I order something that is not listed on your website?
A: Although we are adding new products to our online store every day, we know that occasionally there are products we do not have listed that you really want to order. At the New Jersey store location, we have over 18,000 items, and we may have just what you are looking for. In the case we do not, we will make every effort to try to get it for you. Please let us know your request as well as any information you may have about the product.
Q: When is my credit card charged for my online order?
A: In order to not delay your order, once you hit the process/complete order button, you are automatically charged for your order to your credit card. You will then be prompted if the card is therefore declined or if the order did not go through. You will also receive an invoice confirmation through the email address you provided.
